Internet of Things in energy: technologies, applications, challenges and future trends

Abstract:

Undergoing a continuous evolution, the energy sector is on the threshold of a transformation that will make the transition from a technical, hierarchical and planned system to an intelligent and optimized system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, which will fundamentally change this section. IoT has become one of the fastest evolving technologies.The paper presents components of an IoT system, IoT-based technologies (communication technologies, sensors and actuators) that underlie the transformation of this sector and the evolution of IoT applications in energy (smart cities, smart grids, smart buildings and smart transportation). It also presents challenges and trends of future evolution (blockchain, Green IoT) towards which the energy sector is going.
