Open Access to Digital Information – A Resource in the Knowledge-based Economy

Abstract:

The open access to digital information represents one of the challenges of the modern society. Information generates knowledge and the creation, accumulation and exploitation of knowledge represents the foundation of the social and cultural growth and also the one of the economic growth. In a society where knowledge represents the main competitive advantage, the access to information and the knowledge of using the information become the source of power. One can see that advantaged social groups easier have easier access to information, thus the power and access to information management raises a number of ethical issues. The purpose of this paper is to identify new ways for a proper dissemination of knowledge and open access to digital information can be a key factor in this. Identifying new channels of production and distribution of knowledge can have a major impact on businesses today. Access to digital information plays a crucial role in this equation and requires broadening the spectrum to see and use digital information as a means to attain knowledge, and therefore power. The open access to digital information as a key component of the process of accesing and generating of knowledge, understanding the dynamics behind this and the readiness to use full capacity of its benefits represents an accurate mechanisms for the dissemination of knowledge.
