Definirea sistemelor integrate de producţie trebuie privită într-o manieră evoluționistă şi are în vedere aspectele funcţionale, conceptuale şi tehnologice.
Structura fluxului material, structura funcţională și structura suportului tehnologic, hardware si software, constituie elementele reprezentative ale unui sistem integrat de producţie.
