The Optimal Choice for Supplying the Railroad Capacity of the Trans – Carpathians Lines
Adrian BITULEANU
The paper presents a study of the choices of the Romanian Railway company „CFR” S. A. to supply the railroad capacity on the trans-Carpathian lines. This is a result of the development of two international railways: corridor IV ( from west to east) and corridor IX (from north to south). Both corridors are breaking through the Meridional Carpathians Mountains.
The decider has to take into account some technical alternatives to increase the transportation flow capacity on these lines:
- one alternative is to multiply three or four times the capacity of the existent railroad lines between Bucharest and Ploiești.
- the other solution is to break through the Olt Valley (Bucureşti-Piteşti-Rm. Vîlcea-Sibiu).
