Abstract: Grid computing technology has provided new opportunities for accessing computational resources on demand. The computing resources which are available within Grid sites (resource providers) are under the control of entities which are administrative and operational independent. These sites are interconnected in large-scale distributed infrastructures. By using a specific Grid middleware such as gLite, it is possible to access computational resources in a safe and efficient way. These resources are shared by members of Virtual Organizations which are supported by the Grid sites. The article examines some of the main directions of research in the Grid computing domain, and exemplifies the implementation of this technology within RO-01-ICI Grid site.
Key words: Grid computing, Grid services, gLite, large scale distributed infrastructures.
